In early March 2025, the International non-profit organization ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) announced its plans to phase out the use of the domain.su, which is a domain of the former Soviet Union, by 2030.
Currently in the zone .su has registered about 100,000 domain names, and this resource is still available for new registrations. The domain is managed by the Russian Institute for the Development of Public Networks. RosNIIROS may apply for an extension of the validity period until 2035.
According to the ICANN policy approved in 2022, it provides for the end of operation of national top-level domains that were excluded from the ISO 3166-1 standard. This process usually takes five years, with the possibility of extending it for another five years in consultation with the National Names Support Organization (ccNSO). The technical work of the domain can be saved, subject to an appropriate ccNSO decision.
The .su domain was removed from the ISO 3166-1 standard in 1992, but remained active due to the lack of a clear policy on the part of ICANN. With the adoption of the new strategy, ICANN began to phase out the use of this domain. The final decision will be official after ICANN makes a public notification, starting a five-year countdown to the final deactivation of the .su domain.
"ICANN has sent an official letter to the administrator of the .su domain notifying him of plans to terminate his work by 2030. The organization was going to publish an official deletion notice on February 13, making the decision public and starting a five-year countdown to domain shutdown. However, it seems that this notification has not been sent yet," Domain Name Wire explained.
